Social Media Club Vancouver Pub Night on Oct 19th

This week SMC-YVR is hosting our 2nd monthly pub night. EVERY MONTH, 3RD WEEK, 3RD DAY – great things happen in 3s.

This month we’ll be meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 from 6:30 pm -11 pm at the New Oxford Public House, 1144 Homer Street, Vancouver, BC

To add to the fun, this month we’re asking people to dress in your best Ivy League themed look, aka your Oxford Best!

What does OXFORD Best mean?

A vintage hat, a jacket, a tie, a sweater… it adds to your wardrobe—elegantly.

Dressing the part means selecting the accessory that brings you into the mood of fun and good conversation, be it intellectual or just sharing your week.

A costume is optional. Be confident that cameras will be at the ready to be added to SMC-YVR History.

You can RSVP on out Meetup page.

Curator’s Corner: Remembering Steve Jobs

I’m a bit late in joining the chorus of posts remembering the life and  impact of Steve Jobs.  But our delays allowed us to handpick what I think are among the best of the bunch:

  • Death, Steve Jobs and Social Media: Declamatory media gives us the outline of the facts. Steve Jobs is dead. But then something has to invest those facts with meaning. And that’s the job of participatory media. (Huffington Post)
  • What [Guy Kawasaki] Learned From Steve Jobs: Many people have explained what one can learn from Steve Jobs. But few, if any, of these people have been inside the tent and experienced first hand what it was like to work with him. (How to Change the World)

Curator’s Corner: Online Monopolies and More!

Here is this week’s collection of cool content:

Facebook has become too complicated.

  • Facebook Won’t Like This Apple-Twitter Union: Twitter-Apple could be a significant threat to Facebook both in terms of cannibalizing some day-to-day use cases from its users, and in offering a mobile advertising platform that could offer even more precise audience targeting. (Fast Company)
  • 3 Layers of Social Media Connections: The way our organizations are layered and interconnected makes a big difference in how information flows through those systems. (Brass Tack Thinking)

Learn About Learnstreaming with SMC International

If you were not aware, the international wing of Social Media Club has an initiative they refer to as SMCEDU. This initiative offers weekly chats and resources for Professors, Instructors and those interested in learning more and supporting the higher education space by bringing technology, case study and social media into the classroom.  This arm of SMC also supports our Student Chapters, which are now on almost 20 US campuses, including Penn State, American University, Syracuse, University of Texas Austin and many more.

Every week the SMCEDU Board members and Interim Director, Terry Eberhart host a different topic specific to the higher ed space, with important conversations that involve faculty/student challenges along with the sharing of great resources.  In order to involve more international chapters and members, they have started hosting two chats every Wednesday,

  • Chat 1 starts on Wed Sept 28th: at 9 AM PT
  • Chat 2 starts on Wed Sept 28th: at 6 PM PT

This week’s #SMEDU topic is hosted by guest Dr. Thomas Ho, and will be discussing how to better leverage livestream tools in the classroom and/or for student learning. You can see the topic post here.

The announcement of Facebook’s Timeline brings “lifestreaming” into the mainstream. Have you dreamed of a “learnstream” which would create learning artifacts to enable us to assess learning more effectively?

Join the next #smedu Twitter chats on Wednesday, September 28th (New York USA time),  to consider the following questions:

  1. Does lifestreaming have any relevance to education?
  2. What contribution could lifestreaming make to assess learning?
  3. HOW could social media contribute to create learnstreams?
  4. Which social media services are needed to improve our ability to do so?

*   *   *

Join. Dr Thomas Ho and SMC’s Terry Eberhart (@digin4ed) on Wednesday as we discuss these issues. We hold two chats every Wednesday to accomodate schedule conflicts and time zones across the world.  We use the hashtag #SMedu for our chats as well as our channel to share information and resources throughout the week.
